I had an interesting discussion with someone recently, about celebrating of certain holidays, what they mean, origins traditions, and current societies views of them, of course halloween was first on my mind, as this weekend is the 31st and many people will be partying and trick or treating, kids and adults alike have all ben dressing up and having parties all week long. Even my own daughters school, which is a catholic school by the way, (you'd hope they would know better, but no, not even most churches know any better), her school is haviong their own dress up and party which my girl will most likely be staying home from school that day. Totally oblivious to knowing what it's really all about. Now there are past ties and origins, but there are also many christians specifically, that say that well, we take it and make it our own, make it harmless, it's okay to celebrate it because it just doesn't mean what it used to. But I wonder if that is even appropriate. Can you take something and change it and make it your own? Can you change the truth then, of what it was meant to be? As far as I am concerned, halloween has always been evil. And what the bible says is fairly basic and easy to understand. It tells us that we are to stay far away from the very appearance of these things. Anything that can cause us to take focus away from Him, from what He has called us to do, should be avoided.
And although it is true that many people are simply blinded as to the truth of these holidays and what they mean, once the truth is revealed and they have that understanding, to me it seems there should be no excuse. The devil "is a sly old fox", we sing with the kids in sunday school. He is the greatest deciever, the father of lies, the ruler of the earth. Are we following man, or are we following God? Where do our priorities lie?
Now I think about all holidays, because they all seem to tie in to each other really. Birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Halloween, you name it.
Then comes in the age old addage..."What Would Jesus Do?"...well? What WOULD he do? Would he be celebrating all these, saying "Oh, its ok, we're just having fun", or would he stay away from this completely?
We are called, to be set apart from the world. We are called to let His light shine in us. Is it even possible that others can see this light, that they can know who we are when we blend in so well, even to the point of taking these traditions and attempting to "christianize" them and make them our own? To cover up the evil with some sort of "good" and put Gods name on it, does that take away the evil? I say no, and I dare say that God would see right through that facade for what it really is, and that is satans ploy to make light of serious things, to make excuses for sins and to take the focus off of what is truth.
And I don't know how to say it as well as some might, but I just feel that I have been given an insight, a sort of understanding, that all of these things are displeasing to God and should not really be tolerated. It is so engrained in our lives, because of society, that even when it comes to our children, we do not wish to offend, or worse yet, to stand out...but isn't that exactly what we are called to do?
God says he will make the foolish wise and the wise of this world foolish. So then begs the question, which "fool" will YOU be?
1Corinthians 1:18 says "For the message of the cross isfoolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."
1Corinthians 1:20 says "Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?"
1Corinthians 2:14 says "The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."
1Corinthians 3:18-19 says "Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness"
Why do you think Paul talked so much about foolishness? I think it has to dow with being blinded also. That some people are so blinded that they cannot see the truth, they become the fools of this world, if that even makes sense. I don't know, things like this just seem so black and white to me like they never did before.
I try not to be the type that sees the devil under every rug, in every shadow, but somethings I know are important, and this is one of them, I only wish there was a way to explain myself better to make people understand. Point is, the bible tells us that if there is even a sliver of a doubt, if there is even a slight chance that something would cause another to lose their focus, then we should have nothing to do with it. Isn't this included in that? Whitewashing a lie doesn't take away the lie, watering down the truth and making light of it is satans way of causing us to become complacent and lukewarm, and we all know what the bible says will happen to the lukewarm, don't we?
Rev 3:15-16 "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 1So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth."
I see alot of people that just sit on the fence, afraid to take a stand for something, afraid to stick out, they try to blend in and to not offend the masses. But did not Christ offend? He spoke the truth! And it offended many people that were positive they had the truth already but were blinded (ie) the pharisees.
We are so close, that it's time to get off the fence, time to make a radical stand for truth, and for me this is one of those things.
Actually, I am considering what to do about it. I KNOW now, that I cannot possibly excuse myself and participate in the activities I have in the past, nor allow my child to do so, knowing that they are not pleasing to God, but are in fact supportive of the evil ones plan to distract us from our purpose. To use things that I know are symbols that are used for rituals and practices that are not of God they are directly against God. But for now it's a start, to know, and I pray God helps me to know what it is I should do about it now, where to go from here....
Now don't get me wrong please, I am in no way trying to tell people what is right or wrong or what to do, and I am not judging based on their choices, but I would hope and pray that each one would be able to examine for themselves where they stand and what they should do based on the word of God, and not on fitting in or not offended mainstream society. Don't listen to what I say as gospel. Pray, read your bible, and seek God, the Truth is right there.
God Bless,
chelle
